The skin around the heel bone (called the Calcaneus) is thin and sensitive and there is minimal padding between the skin and bone because there is little tendon or muscle soft tissue protecting the bone. This makes it a vulnerable area that is prone to stress and inflammation. When the heel has prolonged contact with a surface such as a bed, this can cause shear pressure and result in blisters and pressure injuries.
